Marchant Recruitment
Reading, Berkshire

Location: Langley, Reading, Berkshire

Job Title: Behaviour Mentor
School Setting: Secondary School (KS3–KS5)
Pay Rate: £90–£125 per day (dependent on experience)
Contract Type: Full-time, long-term, term-time only
Start Date: Immediate or by agreement

Role Overview

We are excited to offer an opportunity for a dedicated, empathetic, and proactive Behaviour Mentor to join a forward-thinking secondary school in Langley, Reading . This school values student wellbeing alongside academic achievement and is committed to providing a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment.

As a Behaviour Mentor, you will support students who struggle to manage behaviour, emotional challenges, or engagement in learning. Many pupils may experience difficulties such as anxiety, emotional dysregulation, low self-esteem, ADHD, or SEMH-related issues. Some students may have complex personal or family circumstances impacting their learning and social development.

Your role will be central to ensuring these students feel supported, understood, and capable of positive behavioural and emotional change. You will provide consistent guidance, act as a trusted adult, and work collaboratively with teachers and pastoral staff to remove barriers to learning.

Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role

The purpose of this role is to support students in overcoming barriers to education caused by emotional or behavioural challenges. You will work proactively to prevent behavioural issues, while also providing timely interventions when students require additional support.

The school uses a trauma-informed, restorative approach to behaviour management, recognising that challenging behaviour often signals unmet needs. Behaviour Mentors are integral in helping students understand and manage their emotions, develop social skills, and build resilience.

Your work will directly contribute to reducing exclusions, improving engagement, and promoting positive student outcomes both academically and socially.

Key Responsibilities

As a Behaviour Mentor in Langley, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 mentoring to students with emotional, behavioural, or social challenges

  • Delivering small group sessions focusing on emotional regulation, social skills, resilience, and self-confidence

  • Supporting students in lessons to improve focus, engagement, and positive behaviour

  • Assisting students during transitions, break times, and lunch periods to promote safety and inclusion

  • De-escalating challenging situations calmly and professionally

  • Supporting students returning from fixed-term exclusions or extended absence

  • Assisting with the development and implementation of behaviour support plans and interventions

  • Working closely with teaching staff, SENCOs, pastoral teams, and senior leaders to coordinate support

  • Monitoring progress, maintaining records, and reporting outcomes to pastoral leaders

  • Promoting restorative practices and reflection to encourage long-term behavioural change

  • Ensuring adherence to safeguarding policies and maintaining professional boundaries

The School Environment

The school in Langley serves a diverse community and is highly regarded for its supportive pastoral provision and commitment to inclusion. Staff are encouraged to foster strong, positive relationships with students and to adopt a consistent, calm, and empathetic approach to behaviour management.

Leadership recognises the importance of Behaviour Mentors within the school and provides ongoing guidance, supervision, and professional development opportunities. The school promotes a culture of care, respect, and high expectations, understanding that students achieve best when they feel safe, valued, and supported.

The school integrates restorative practices and trauma-informed approaches with traditional behaviour management, focusing on addressing underlying causes rather than relying solely on sanctions.

Students You Will Support

Students supported by the Behaviour Mentor may:

  • Display disruptive, withdrawn, or challenging behaviour

  • Struggle with emotional regulation, self-esteem, or anxiety

  • Have SEMH needs, ADHD, or attachment-related difficulties

  • Experience difficulties with peer relationships or authority figures

  • Be at risk of disengagement or exclusion from education

Your role is to provide a stabilising, supportive presence that helps students rebuild trust, confidence, and engagement in school life.

Who This Role Is Suitable For

This role is well-suited to individuals who:

  • Have experience working with children or young people in education, youth work, or care

  • Are patient, resilient, and empathetic

  • Can manage challenging behaviour effectively and compassionately

  • Are confident in building strong, professional relationships with students

  • Are motivated by supporting inclusion, emotional wellbeing, and personal development

Graduates in psychology, education, social sciences, or youth work are encouraged to apply, as are experienced Behaviour Mentors seeking a rewarding school-based role.

Essential Requirements

  • Experience supporting children or young people with behavioural or emotional challenges

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills

  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and solution-focused under pressure

  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting inclusion

  • Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and training

Desirable Experience

  • Previous Behaviour Mentor or Teaching Assistant experience

  • Knowledge of SEMH, ADHD, or alternative provision

  • Familiarity with trauma-informed or restorative practices

  • Relevant qualifications in education, mental health, or pastoral care

What the School Offers

  • Competitive daily pay with long-term stability

  • Comprehensive induction and ongoing professional development

  • Supportive pastoral and leadership teams

  • Opportunities for career progression within education and pastoral roles

  • A positive, inclusive, and professional working environment

Why This Role Is Impactful

As a Behaviour Mentor in Langley, you will directly influence students who may face significant barriers to learning. Through consistent guidance, empathy, and support, you will help students develop coping strategies, emotional resilience, and confidence, enabling them to engage more fully with education and life beyond school.

If you are passionate about inclusion, motivated by challenge, and committed to helping students succeed, this Behaviour Mentor role in Langley offers a highly rewarding and meaningful opportunity to make a lasting difference.
